Handhelds and minority TV channels. That's all we're worth.
In recent years, continental European wrestling has received even less airtime and publicity than its British counterpart - so it was a pleasant surprise to dig up the show 'Culture Shock', focusing on Finland's VPW. Inevitably, nearly all of the featured stars are passport-wielding Americans - but there are lots of extra features from Finnish TV, including several interviews (in English) and a Louis Theroux-style presenter workout. Picture quality isn't great. Sonny Siaki vs Mike Sanders… AJ Styles vs Kid Kash (NWA Heavyweight Title - best of three falls match)… Shane Douglas vs Sabu (streetfight)
Along the same lines as the VPW tape, this was the first TV exposure the FWA ever received. Includes matches from the 'King of England' tournament, starring Doug Williams, Jodie Fleisch, Jonny Storm, Rob Brookside and the mercurial Eddie Guerrero. Plus three matches from Irish Whip Wrestling.
Cracking international-flavoured Walthamstow card, featuring Mikey Whipwreck, Sabu and Rob Van Dam, UWF hero Masakatsu Funaki, and well-respected German workers Michael Kovac and Ulf Herrman. Dirtbike vs Whipwreck and the main event are real crowd-pleasers. Rob Van Dam vs Michael Kovac… The Dirtbike Kid vs Phil Powers… Mikey Whipwreck vs Jason Cross… Sabu vs Ulf Hermann… Steve Grey vs Masakatsu Funaki… Jason Cross vs Stevie Knight… Mikey Whipwreck vs The Dirtbike Kid (British Commonwealth Junior Heavyweight Title Tournament Final)… Sabu & Rob Van Dam vs Michael Kovac & Ulf Hermann
Doug Williams (ROH/FWA/NOAH) and Gary Steele (future NWA World Champion), in the infancy of their careers, feature on this Sittingbourne card. Both hinted at the great things to come, but most of their colleagues seemed intent on outdoing Heroes of Wrestling for Worst Card Ever. Which is always a laugh. Thunder vs Mr. Vain… Alex Shane vs Richards… Gary Steele & Goodfella vs Seek 'n' Destroy… Sugar Ray vs Quinton… Phil Powers vs Archer... Warlock vs The Titan (chain match)… Andre Baker vs Doug Williams (frying pan ladder match)
Compilation put together on a shoestring by Ross Hutchinson, the man behind Suckerpunch fanzine. Includes the full 'Michinoku Pro's British Tour' commercial release, handheld versions of matches taped in Croydon and Portsmouth, and an interview with the Great Sasuke - conducted by our slightly star-struck host. The bingo-style ring announcers and 'unpredictable' rings add to the homegrown charm. Shiryu vs 'Rowdy' Ricky Knight… Tiger Mask IV vs Hanzo Nakajima… The Great Sasuke vs Danny Collins (best of three falls)… Clip of Johnny Saint… Rob Brookside & Rico vs Terry Boy & Sato... The Great Sasuke, Tiger Mask IV & Hanzo Nakajima vs Terry Boy, Sato & Shiryu
Sabu made his first ever trip across the pond to meet his British equivalent, the Dirtbike Kid, at this Walthamstow card. Witch Doctor vs Big T… Doug Williams vs Jackie Pallo Jr… Phil Powers vs Andre Baker… Judge Dredd vs Tony McMillan… Doug Williams vs Witch Doctor… Doug Williams vs Judge Dredd… Sabu vs The Dirtbike Kid
Eight episodes of RESLO TV, recorded from S4C in the summer of 1995. The commentary is in Welsh (very lyrical), but the matches are from all over the place - from the UK to the CWA, in Germany and Austria. The matches from Germany are perhaps the most interesting, featuring the star likes of Dave Finlay and Masa Chono. Doc Dean vs Danny Collins… Jesse James, Hollywood Blond & Legend of Doom vs Dave Taylor, PN News & Mike Preston… Ice Train, Augustus Smisl & partner vs PN News, Texas Hawk & Dirty Dan… Tony St. Clair vs Masa Chono… Too Cold Scorpio vs Hiroshi Yamamoto (Tenzan)… Davey Finlay vs Doink… Legend of Doom vs PN News… Dave Finlay vs Masa Chono… Dick Slater vs Franz Schumann… Rambo match… Dave Finlay vs Blackie (ladder match)… Klondyke Kate & Naughty Nikki vs Tina & Julie Starr (elimination match)… Royal Rumble. As a bonus, this tape includes some ITV World of Sport matches, featuring Dave Finlay, Mike Scott, Tony St. Clair, the Taylors and Kendo Nagasaki.
Catch Wrestling's annual 'supercard', held in Bremen, Germany. The selling point for this tape is the unlikely mix of past and present WWF, WCW and New Japan wrestlers on the card, including Hiroyoshi Tezan (sent to Europe to 'fatten up') and John Hawk (latterly known as Bradshaw). Augustus Smisl & Ulf Hermann vs Giant Haystacks & Primo Carnera… Ice Train vs Hiroshi Yamamoto (Tenzan)… Tony St. Clair & Steve Casey vs Dave Finlay & John Hawk (Bradshaw)… Franz Schuhmann vs Barry Horowitz… Jim Duggan vs Cannonball Grizzly… Rambo vs Papa Shango
This is filmed in black and white, but the picture quality is good - and the matches are more than good, thanks to the likes of Chris Benoit, Johnny Smith and Dave Finlay (the second Benoit-Finlay match in particular is a scorcher). A young Vader ('Bull Power') also shows his face. Tony St. Clair vs David Taylor… Chris Benoit vs Dave Finlay… Otto Wanz & Franz Schumann vs Rambo & Buffalo Patterson (Maxx Payne/Man Mountain Rock)… Rambo, Otto Wanz & Franz Schumann vs The Equaliser, Buffalo Patterson & partner… Col. Brody match… Chris Benoit vs Dave Finlay… Johnny Smith vs Chris Benoit… Tony St. Clair vs Buffalo Patterson… Bull Power (Vader) confronts Otto Wanz & Rambo… Dave Finlay vs Franz Schumann
Card from Krefeld, Germany, featuring Steven Regal and David Taylor (later the Blue Bloods tag team in WCW). Jorg Schrage vs Indio Guajaro… Terry Rudge vs Bryan Walsh… Madusa Micelli vs Wendi Richter… Ulf Ranger vs Bernie Wright… Steven Regal vs Anakonda… David Taylor vs Jesse Texas
